A man in the southern city of Arad shot dead an individual he said was trying to steal his car, police said on Sunday morning.
The 34-year-old suspected burglar was taken to Beersheba’s Soroka Medical Center, where medical staff pronounced his death.
The man, in his 70s, was said to have told police he saw a suspicious person trying to break into his vehicle and fired shots toward him using a gun he had in his possession.
According to the Walla news site, the shooter said that he had not aimed his weapon at the suspected burglar and did not mean to harm him.
“I fired at the wheels. I did not intend to hit him,” the man reportedly told police investigators. He was expected to appear in court later on Sunday for a remand hearing.
The incident in Arad was the second overnight shooting after police said a man was killed during an exchange of fire in the northern town of Maghar.
Police said in a statement that two suspects opened fire on a bank branch and medical center in the town, and also at officers who subsequently tried to arrest them.
The Walla news site said that police were operating undercover and had been observing the bank when the suspects initially opened fire.
In the subsequent exchange of fire, one suspect was killed and a passerby was moderately wounded. There were no reports of police injuries. Police did not say if the second suspect had been arrested.
