Superstorm Sandy: New York transport creaks back into life

With public transport running at only a fraction of its normal strength, many
New Yorkers headed for their cars, creating long queues at petrol stations.

JFK airport, the largest in the New York region and the usual arriving point
for tourists, opened at noon for a limited service, joining Newark Liberty
airport in neighbouring New Jersey.

LaGuardia remained closed and officials were unable to give any estimate when
it would reopen.

Most of the subway lines are expected to re-open with a limited service on
Thursday.
