It’s often said that as we get older, our reactions and thought-processes become much slower.

But try saying that to 70-year-old ‘supergran’ Agnes Crystal.

The pensioner recently averted disaster when she steered a 12-tonne runaway bus out of the path of an oncoming car.

The brave great-grandmother jumped from
her seat when the bus began to career down a hill in her home city of
Dundee, colliding with several parked cars.

Quick-thinking Mrs Crystal managed to stop the National Express Dundee 32 service by ramming it into some nearby railings.

But Mrs Crystal, who has never held a UK driving licence, was keen to play down her heroics – and went straight to her line dancing class after the ordeal.

The mother-of-three, who still works as a shop assistant, jumped on the very next bus to make sure she didn’t miss her class.

She said: ‘I had been late the week before and didn’t want to be late again.’

Last night, senior officials at Tayside Police confirmed they would be putting Mrs Crystal forward for a bravery award for formal recognition of her actions.

She said: ‘There’s no need for it. It’s really nice that they have thought to put me forward but I’m just happy that everything’s alright. That’s the main thing.’

There were eight other passengers on board the bus when it began to move after the driver stepped outside the vehicle. It is understood he had gone to a nearby shop.

Mrs Crystal said: ‘You could just feel it go like it was about to move. By the time I got there, it had started to take off.

‘It was moving to the other side of the road and there was a car coming the other way.

‘All I could think of was that, if this car didn’t stop, there would be a big accident.

‘So I grabbed the wheel and swung it round and pulled it the other way.

‘It’s just something that happened and something you had to get on with – or I don’t know what could have happened.’

One passenger suffered minor injuries in the accident in December and two parked cars were damaged.

The windscreen of the bus also fell out, shattering glass across the pavement.

Mrs Crystal received a ‘lovely big bunch of flowers’ from National Express for her actions – and the driver was reported to the authorities, although he did not have to appear in court.

A spokeswoman from Tayside Police said: ‘The quick reactions of Agnes Crystal are commendable. She assisted in bringing the incident to a safe conclusion ensuring no persons were injured as a result.

‘A report is being submitted for consideration for formal recognition of her actions.’

SUPERGRAN! I nominate you for this year’s woman of the year award.

The word ‘awesome’ gets overused a lot. However, it’s justified here: Agnes – just awesome!

Respect to this lady but what the hell was the driver doing leaving it unattended?

It won’t surprise me if the wonderful Agnes is charged with not having a driving licence or insurance to drive the bus. Well done lass, you are indeeed a hero. xxx

Well done Agnes, you didn’t need a cape, pants and boots!

Good for you Mrs “C” .. your courage, quick thinking modesty are a credit to you, very well done.

didn’t the driver commit a crime by leaving the vehicle unattended?
