Summary Box: Oracle wins, loses in Google trial

PARTIAL VERDICT: A federal jury has concluded Google‘s popular Android software for mobile devices infringes on the copyrights of Java, a programming system that Oracle bought two years ago as part of a $7.3 billion acquisition of Sun Microsystems.

HOLLOW VICTORY: Monday’s verdict may be of little value to Oracle Corp. because the jury deadlocked on the key question of whether Google Inc.‘s Java usage is legally permitted under the “fair use” protections of U.S law.

BOTTOM LINE: It appears unlikely that Oracle will realize its goal of winning up to $1 billion in damages.
