Many Egyptians denounced Omar Suleiman’s move saying that the ex-spy chief was a servant of deposed Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak, a Press TV correspondent reported on Monday.
Surrounded by a cordon of military police and some supporters, Suleiman formally filed his application to the Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood’s presidential candidate, Khairat al-Shater, has criticized Sulieman’s decision saying the move is an attempt to “steal the revolution.”
“I consider his entry an insult to the revolution and the Egyptian people,” al-Shater said in Cairo on Sunday.
Suleiman served as the Egyptian intelligence minister during the former dictatorial regime. He was also appointed vice president in January 2011 when the revolution gained momentum. He was directly involved in the killing of protesters.
