Strike hits Indian-administered Kashmir

Shops, businesses, and schools were closed in nearly all streets of the summer capital Srinagar as well as other districts on Saturday in response to the call made by All Parties Hurriyat (Freedom) Conference (APHC) in protest at the conviction of an American citizen of Kashmiri origin, Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai, by a US court last month, Xinhua reported.

Fai was found guilty last week for concealing his links to Pakistan’s intelligence agency of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), while presenting himself as an independent voice for the members of Congress and successive presidential administrations in the United States.

“New Delhi’s lobbying in the US got Dr. Fai trapped in its net. This is an attempt to malign the ongoing movement in Kashmir. Dr. Fai has been actively highlighting Kashmir’s peaceful struggle in the world at diplomatic levels for the past several years,” said a statement issued by the APHC.

Authorities had deployed paramilitary troops and policemen, fearing clashes in some parts of Srinagar and other sensitive areas.

“So far, we haven’t received any report of untoward incident from anywhere. The situation is under control,” a police official in Srinagar said on condition of anonymity.

Both India and Pakistan claim Kashmir in full and have fought two wars over the region since they gained independence from Britain in 1947.

New Delhi has been repeatedly criticized for resorting to force rather than finding a diplomatic solution to the dispute.

In 2010, the Kashmir Valley was rocked by a series of protests, in which at least 110 people were killed. The protests were sparked when Indian forces shot a student dead in June 2010.

India and Pakistan have failed to resolve the Kashmir issue, despite a series of meetings between the foreign ministers of the two countries last month.

The people of Kashmir say only a referendum can resolve the dispute.
