20-year-old Hilal Ahmad Dar was killed by Indian army soldiers in the northern district of Bandipora, 60 kilometers (37 miles) north of Srinagar, on Tuesday night.
“It’s a coldblooded murder and we condemn it. He was a civilian and innocent. Labeling him a militant is unfair. He was arrested outside the mosque. How can the Indian army play with the sentiments of the people here?” Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik told Press TV.
Saturday’s strike was called by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, which is one of the largest political formations in Kashmir.
All shops and business establishments and most banks and schools in the state capital Srinagar were closed due to the strike.
Hurriyat Conference Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani issued a statement on Saturday, saying, “The youth was killed in cold blood by the Indian army and we strongly condemn the incident.”
“This incident is part of the State’s plan to muzzle the voices of resistance,” Geelani said.
Indian Defense Minister A.K. Antony, who arrived in the region on Saturday along with the chief of the army staff, General Bikram Singh, has ordered an investigation into the incident. He said the dead man was a militant and was killed in cross-fire.
In his statement, Geelani, who has been put under house arrest, also said, “We reject the probes ordered by state government and army because they have never been able to prove their credibility in the valley.”
He added, “Inquiries are ordered to pacify the anger of people and then discarded into cold storage. We will only accept a probe by an international agency.”
The 83-year-old pro-independence leader added, “Today’s strike should be an eye-opener for the Indian defense minister that despite the presence of 700,000 troops in the state, they were not able to kill our sentiment for freedom.”
Over the past two decades, the conflict in Kashmir has left over 47,000 people dead by the official count, although other sources say the death toll could be as high as 90,000.
Kashmir lies at the heart of more than 60 years of hostility between India and Pakistan. Both countries claim the region in full but each only has control over a section of the territory.
