The movie that launched the career of Australian director Baz Luhrmann will premiere as a musical in Sydney next year.

Strictly Ballroom started out as a stage play devised by Baz Luhrmann with a group of students at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) back in 1984, before becoming a box office hit.

It has been reconfigured as a musical and will make its debut next March, with the same creative team as was behind the 1992 film, including director and
co-writer Baz Luhrmann, set and costume designer Catherine Martin, choreographer John O’Connell and co-writer Craig Pearce.

The New South Wales Premier Barry O’Farrell lobbied for the show to open in Sydney within one month of being elected.

“We estimate that the world premiere of this musical in this city will generate something like $20 million over its run,” he said.

“Bringing interstate and international visitors to this city, creating jobs, supporting jobs.”

Strictly Ballroom was one of the most successful Australian films of all time, earning more than $80 million at the box office.

It was winner of the Prix de Jeunnesse and runner up for the Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Strictly Ballroom also swept the field at the 1992 Australian Film Institute Awards (AFI’s), gaining 13 nominations and winning in eight major categories.

The musical will debut in Sydney on 25th March 2014, at the Lyric Theatre.
