A driver who wrote off a ‘James Bond’ Aston Martin as he raced a high powered BMW at nearly 80mph through the streets of London was spared jail today.

Saifur Rahman, 24, was at the wheel of an Aston Martin Vantage which had once been used in a James Bond premiere and Christopher Owolabni, 28, in a BMW M3 when the two pulled up side by side near Canary Wharf.

The pair didn’t know each other but ‘out of sheer bravado’ gunned the engines and raced the cars, both hired and worth a combined total of £120,000, in and out of tunnels towards the Limehouse Link in Poplar.

They reached speeds of up to 78 mph before colliding in the ‘random street-racing contest’, leaving the Aston Martin ‘spinning wildly out of control’ and crashing into a wall. It ended an ‘unrecognisable wreck’.

Both walked away unharmed despite the crash taking place on a busy afternoon on July 6.

Detective Constable Robert Eastick of the MPS’s Traffic Operational Command Unit said: ‘It was a miracle no-one was killed.

‘The Aston Martin was a few feet away from colliding with other motorists after it had lost control. Both drivers showed a complete disregard for other motorists and their own safety when they raced at very high speed on what was a very busy summer day.

‘Some may think that racing high-performance cars around central London is glamorous but the stark reality is you risk your own life and the lives of others.

‘A collision of some kind is almost inevitable and it is only by pure luck that both men were able to walk away alive.’

At Snaresbrook Crown Court Owolabni, from Deptford was sentenced to a nine-month sentence suspended for 12 months, ordered to complete 140 hours of community service and disqualified from driving for 18 months for dangerous driving.

The Aston Martin had been hired by Saifur Rahman, and he was given 100 hours community service and disqualified from driving for 18 months for his part in the street race which left the car a total wreck

Rahman, of Tower Hamlets received three months imprisonment suspended for 12 months, given 100 hours community service and disqualified from driving for 18 months for his part.

A third man, Ryan Atherleyley, 28, of Rotherhithe was sentenced to three months suspended for 12 months and ordered to complete 150 hours of community service for Attempting to Pervert the Course of Justice.

He originally claimed that he was the driver of the BMW M3 at the time of the collision.

Owolabni was also found guilty of attempting to pervert the course of justice for his role in claiming Atherleyley was the driver at the time of the crash.

All three men were also ordered to pay £500 each for court costs.

Owolabni and Rahman both face driving re-tests once their disqualification period ends.
