One man has died and another is in a critical condition after a street race in a western New South Wales city overnight.

Witnesses say two cars were seen racing down Brisbane Street in Dubbo just before midnight when both drivers lost control of their vehicles.

One crashed into a tree, killing its 20-year-old driver and leaving a 19-year-old passenger with serious neck injuries.

The other careered into a power pole before hitting a tree, causing a blackout in the area.

The 20-year-old driver of that car was thrown onto the road and was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to Dubbo Base Hospital in an induced coma.

He is expected to be transferred to St George Hospital in Sydney later today.

Local detectives are investigating and will prepare a report for the coroner.
