Street name change in Tehran faces objection of Foreign Ministry

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry has argued against changing the name of a street where the Saudi Arabian embassy sits to Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, a prominent Shiite cleric that Riyadh executed on January 2, a city councilor said.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency on Sunday, Mojtaba Shakeri said the Foreign Ministry has called on the Municipality of Tehran in a written request to overturn the renaming of the street, and give it back its previous name, Boustan.

After Saudi Arabia’s execution of Sheikh Nimr, Shakeri explained, a wave of requests poured in for changing the name of the street near the Saudi embassy to “Martyr Ayatollah Nimr al-Nimr”, so the City Council began to consider it in an urgent motion.

Afterwards, people of Tehran replaced the street name sign “in a spontaneous move” with a new one that reads Ayatollah Nimr, he noted.
