‘Stranger Things’ is a Netflix original series that takes place in a small town in the year 1983.
The story follows several people from the town and how they were affected by top secret government experiments that involve supernatural forces.
This series is now extremely popular and it intentionally mimics everything from the 1970’s and 80’s that has to do with horror, science fiction and fantasy. You’ll easily notice traces of The Goonies, E.T, Stand By Me, Poltergeist and Alien.
There is much more to this series as well, including the fact that it’s inspired by actual events known as the Montauk Project.
‘Stranger Things’ was originally titled “Project Montauk” after the covert government operation on Long Island that allegedly used child runaways as human test subjects. Mind control and time travel were just two of the experiments rumored to have been done under the Montauk Project umbrella. Stranger Things was clearly influenced by Steven Spielberg and Stephen King, with a heaping helping of The X-Files and Twin Peaks thrown in for good measure. But some of its creepiest source material comes from the real world. Plot points about the Upside-Down and the Demogorgon are not only referring to Dungeons and Dragons, but also references to government mind-control programs and covert experiments in telepathy that actually took place in the U.S. throughout the 20th century like MKUltra and Montauk Project. As crazy as it may be, Stranger Things is based on a true story.
The truth is stranger than fiction.
