“I could feel the sound in my chest and in the house
we have hardwood floors and we could feel the vibration.”

– Philip Smith, Arlington, Washington, February 23, 2012

February 28, 2012  Albuquerque, New Mexico –   The strange, often unexplained, sounds reported and sometimes recorded over the past year since at least March 2011 are worldwide in distribution and include a range of different sounds. Some are described by listeners like trumpets or horns.

Click here:  “Strange Sound in Kiev, Ukraine,” uploaded Aug. 11, 2011.

Other sounds are compared to an old TV playing loudly with voices, but words can’t be understood. There are also loud buzzing sounds;  or low beats like drums;  or droning white noise like a freeway, but where there is no freeway.  Click on:  022412 Earthfiles.

Those that have experienced the strange sounds say they first look up, but what they are hearing surrounds them without a specific source point.

In February 2012, I produced reports about the strange sounds for Earthfiles.com and broadcasts for Whitley Strieber’s Unknowncountry Dreamland Online and for the February 23-24, 2012,  radio broadcast of Coast to Coast AM with George Noory. I have received hundreds of emails and begin this report with a map of  the Everett, Yakima and Arlington, Washington state region where strange sounds have recently been heard – and some recorded in Arlington on February 23, 2012, that are like a very loud freeway but next to a house.

Two nights later at 10:30 PM on Saturday, February 25, 2012, in Silverthorne, Colorado, other witnesses to a sudden, strange sound emailed, “It was like a freeway was just suddenly right next to us, but there was not a Doppler effect, where the noise got softer.” [ 4th email below]

Arlington, Everett and Yakima are three Washington state cities
where people have heard strange sounds in February 2012. Arlington is about
20 miles north of Everett; about 50 miles from Whidbey Island Naval Air Station west
of Seattle; and Arlington is about 185 miles from Yakima where there are
U. S. Marine Corps and Army Reserves and Washington National Guard.

Hi Linda,

I’m in Everett, Washington (a few miles north of Seattle). Sometime around 2 a.m. (this morning), I heard an unusual sound. It was a single, prolonged tone. I went outside to see if I could hear it better. From outside it was impossible to tell from which direction the sound was coming. It just seemed to be filling the air, but not close by. It seemed “distant” but quite audible. I’m guessing the tone was close to the note of middle C on a piano. I paid attention to it for about 10 minutes. It was a single, prolonged tone with no breaks or pauses. The sky was clear, temperature outside was about 25 degrees. I’ve lived at the present address for about 7 years and I’m almost always up at this time of the morning. I’ve never heard that sound before.

Hi, I live in Yakima, Washington, about 200 miles east of Seattle. About 2 weeks ago, I was in my living room when my house started vibrating, I have been in many earthquakes in So. California and this was very different. My windows were rattling and it sounded like a 300-pound man running along my upper deck at about 60 miles per hour.

I thought my foundation might have been giving away, as I live on a hill, but when I went outside to check it out I could hear this weird sound that faded in and out. I could not pinpoint where it was coming from. It went on for about 5 min. and then another vibration would come. It was the strangest thing and I mentioned it to my husband, who had left to go out of town that morning and he said it woke him up several times during the night.

After asking around, there were others in the area who felt it, too, and all they could come up with is that maybe it was war games at the firing range 20 miles away. If it were bombs going off, then how could the vibration go on for 7 to 10 seconds at a time and why would the vibrating sound that was fading in and out last so long? Have you heard any other occurrences in this area?

I just wanted to share these recordings I did from Thursday, February 23, 2012. These sounds are not the trumpet sounds that a lot have been hearing, but the other kind of sky sounds. The low rumbling kind.

Location:  Arlington Washington, the sounds seemed to be coming from the West.

Time:  Recordings were taken at 6:30 PM and 7:00 PM, February 23, 2012.

I work in Seattle and leave work to head north 40 miles to Arlington at around 4:30 PM. I get home at around 6:00 PM due to rush hour traffic, so at around 6:30 PM, I went to get the mail and started hearing the rumbling. I then set up my equipment and called my mother who lives 5 minutes away from me to verify the sounds. She told me they have been going on all day. I can verify only from 6:30 PM until I went to sleep at 10:30 PM that the sounds did not stop. At 6:30 PM when the recordings were taken, the noise was shaking the floor of our house and the windows every time it would climax. The lower rumble would come and go in waves. At 10:30 PM, the rumbling was a lot quieter, but could still be heard. I called my mother Friday after work and she told me she could still hear it Friday morning, February 24, 2012.

Recording Equipment:  MXL 990 Phantom powered Mike running through Behringer 12 channel mixer into my PC and recorded with Audacity. The sound equipment, though not top of the line is WAY better then some of those cell phone recordings. I have a music studio in a spare bedroom and used my setup out the window to record the sounds.

Sound Files:  Though not long, the files are so big hotmail only allows 25mbs per email so I will send the second file alone. The first file has a dog barking in the back ground and every once in a while you can hear me whispering to my wife. The first file also cut half my channel off a couple times, not sure why I have NEVER had any issues with my recording equipment.

Audio # 1 (1:30):  Arlington, Washington Low Rumble, February 23, 2012, beginning at 6:30 PM Pacific

Play MP3 of Cut 1, Arlington, WA, Feb. 23, 2012.

Audio # 2 (1:48):  Arlington, Washington Low Rumble, February 23, 2012, beginning at 6:30 PM Pacific

Play MP3 of Cut 2, Arlington, WA, Feb. 23, 2012.

The second file has a truck horn towards the beginning. I came back and recorded another bit because it really started picking up in decibels and was more intense. The high sounds in this one is my computer fan. I hope you have a good bass system where you are because it almost feels just like when we heard it, if you have a good sub woofer. After researching the noise online. We, here in the northwest, have been having these noise for awhile.

Some idea’s on what it could be range from:
Jet engine testing from Whidbey Island Naval base/ Sonar tests? (my opinion – no way)
Atmospheric Ducting
Underground tunneling
CME released from the sun, and so on?

Philip Smith (anonymity requested), works for a heating and air conditioning company in Seattle, Washington, to which he commutes each day from his home in Arlington, about 45 miles northeast of Seattle. Philip is 35-years-old and moved with his wife into their current house three years ago. His normal routine is to get home around 6:30 PM each evening from his Seattle commute, get the mail and have dinner with his wife. But on Thursday, February 23, 2012, at 6:30 PM, he was so puzzled by a strange sound, which filled the air with a low, base sound rattling his chestbone, that Philip hurried to turn on recording equipment he normally uses for work with a local band

Interview:

Philip Smith, HVAC employee, Seattle, Washington, and lives in Arlington, Washington, northeast of Seattle:  “I work in north Seattle and commute from Arlington. It takes me sometimes two hours and on Thursday, February 23rd, I got home close to 6:30 PM, pulled my car in the garage and went to get the mail. There were stars in the sky and only a few patchy clouds – no thunderstorms or weather. That’s when I noticed there was a thundery, jet engine kind of sound all around me. It was very different from the plane traffic we get from the Sea-Tac Airport (Seattle-Tacoma) or from the Navy Base at Whidbey Island. Those are short bursts of sound. This sound kept going.

Fifty miles southwest of Arlington is the Naval Air Station
Whidbey Island (NASWI), Washington, a naval air station located in three
geographically separate facilities on the northern third of Whidbey Island.
NASWI was commissioned as an active U.S. Navy installation on
September 21, 1942. The main portion of the base is called
Ault Field; a second section is the Seaplane Base; the third section is Naval
Outlying Landing Field (NOLF) south of Ault Field primarily used for Field
Carrier Landing Practice (FCLP) by carrier-based jet aircraft. NASWI
currently supports MH-60S Seahawk helicopters, EA-18G Growlers,
EA-6B Prowlers, P-3C Orions, EP-3E ARIES IIs and C-9 Skytrain aircraft.

I listened as I walked with the mail back to the house and realized the sound wasn’t going away. It felt like a base vibration in my chest, a weird kind of thing. I went inside and asked my wife, ‘Do you hear that?’ She said, ‘Yeah, what is that?’ I said, ‘I have no idea!’

The sound had lots of base to it, almost muffled. I could feel the sound in my chest and in the house we have hardwood floors and we could feel the vibration. In some odd way, it was almost more like a vibration than a sound. You know if you stick your head underwater and a jet flew over? It was weird. And it vibrated or resonated in kind of a wave pattern, like up and down vibrations, almost like something breathing as opposed to a jet noise. If you listen to what I recorded with a good subwoofer, you can hear the low tones.

So we went outside to listen and the sound still wasn’t stopping. So I ran into the back bedroom where I keep my recording equipment for a local band I play with, opened the blinds, opened the window, and stuck my vocal mike out the window and just started recording raw the strange sound. It wasn’t as much loud as very basey – it was like someone had a subwoofer outside on the street driving by and you feel like your windows shake a little and the ground vibrates a little and you feel it in your chest. It was like that.

FROM 6:30 PM TO HOW LONG DID YOU RECORD?

I recorded two different shorter segments because people were coming home from work and my mike was turned up to record the sound and it was grabbing all that other sound. The first cut is a minute and a half and quieter in decibels. Then I started recording the second time around 7 PM for nearly two minutes because the decibel level increased then after being in a lull and I had the recording equipment ready, so I just recorded it again when it was more intense. My wife and I had been standing by the front door listening and one wave of the sound was so loud we expected something to happen and looked at each other like, ‘What is going on?’ That’s when I went back to record the second track.

COULD YOU SEE ANY OF YOUR NEIGHBORS ALSO COMING OUT TO LISTEN?

No. I didn’t see anyone.

What Could Sound Be?

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST INSTINCT ABOUT WHAT THE SOUND COULD BE?

My first thought was jet testing at Whidbey Island. The problem with that is I don’t know how long their jet testing goes, but to run a jet for at least four hours that I heard constantly when I stuck my head out the door until I went to bed – I personally do not think that is jet testing.

Whidbey does their night sorties over Arlington, so we get two planes of some kind – I don’t know if they are F-15s or what they are – but they’ll fly right over our house. And when they go directly over the house, you’ll feel it a little bit and then they are gone! We’re like 50 miles from Whidbey Island.

My second idea was maybe the sun hitting the upper ionosphere or something because the sound was sort of like charged particles. But I understand from your Earthfiles report with the NASA solar physicist that solar plasmas interacting with magnetic fields is not audible to human ears, right?

YES, AND IT’S PUZZLING THAT A SOUND CAN STAND OUT THAT AT LEAST FIVE PEOPLE HEARD AT THE SAME TIME AROUND 7 PM ON FEBRUARY 23, 2012, BUT THERE ARE NO REPORTS OF IT.

Yeah, nothing on the media. I don’t really want to stir up trouble that might not need to be stirred! (laughs)

DO YOU MEAN IN THE BACK OF YOUR MIND IS A QUESTION ABOUT WHAT THE GOVERNMENT OR MILITARY MIGHT BE DOING?

Yeah, possibly. The area we’re in is not far from some military bases around here. Whidbey Naval Air Station is one, the closest one to Arlington. There’s one in Everett also.

Philip’s Mother and Two Friends Also Hear Sound

DID YOU CALL ANYONE?

I called my mother when the second wave hit more intensely around 7 PM. I wanted to know if she could hear it because we live on the east side of the I-5 freeway  and she lives on the west side. She’s about ten to fifteen miles from our house. I asked her if she was listening to the sounds and she said, ‘What are you talking about? What sounds?’

But she had a couple of friends with her and they said, ‘Oh, the rumbling that has been going on for hours outside?’ My mom’s friends had heard the sound for hours before I got home from work!

BUT YOUR MOM HAD NOT HEARD ANYTHING?

No, so she went outside. That’s when I could feel the ground shake and then back on the phone my mom said, ‘Oh, my, I can feel and hear that now!’ So it was almost instantaneous that she and my wife and I were feeling and hearing the same thing at the same time when we were on the phone.

SO FOR AT LEAST TEN MILES, THE SOUND WAS AUDIBLE TO FIVE OF YOU.

Right. Then after that 7 PM wave, it subsided again. But when I went to bed at 10:30 PM, I stuck my head out the door and it was still going on.

DID ANY OF YOU CALL POLICE, FIRE OR ANY AUTHORITIES?

No, none of us have. I didn’t think it was life threatening.

DID YOU CALL ANY OF YOUR NEIGHBORS TO SEE IF THEY WERE HEARING IT AS WELL?

No, I didn’t call any of my neighbors.

IN THE THREE YEARS SINCE YOU’VE BEEN IN YOUR ARLINGTON HOUSE, YOU AND YOUR WIFE HAVE NEVER HEARD THE SOUND BEFORE?

Never.”

Linda,

I had just heard your report on Coast to Coast this last week, and on Satuday night (2/25) I heard the sounds. I was staying in Silverthorne,Colorado, this weekend and we were coming home from dinner. We got out of our car at the house at 10:30 PM on Saturday night and heard the intense sound where we could not identify where it came from. It was disturbing to a point where one of my party said, “We need to get inside the house right away!!”  It was like a freeway was just suddenly right next to us, but there was not a Doppler effect, where the noise got softer – like when an “18 wheeler” goes past and away.

Very real and intense. It is amazing when one of the experiences happens to you!!! I wish I had pulled out the iphone!

– Thanks for the efforts. What you are talking about is very real.
