The Brisbane man who killed himself and his three-year-old son by jumping off the Story Bridge was going through a relationship breakdown, it has been revealed.
Teacher Jason Lees and his son Brad plunged to their deaths at around 3.30am Monday morning reportedly after having relationship problems with his wife Danielle, the Courier Mail reports.
Mr Lees family have avoided commenting on the tragedy but a neighbour said she saw Mr Lees’ son Brad hug his father, who was sitting on the back steps of the family home crying.
“I remember the little boy came down and wrapped his arms around him,” Marlene Stephens, who lives next door to Mr Lees home said.
“I’m always going to remember that image,” she said.
Mr Lees’ wife, Danielle, a Gold Coast psychologist, was unavailable for comment and her family declined to comment.
The couple met when Mr Lees moved to Australia from Canada 15 years ago.
Mr Lees taught at the prestigious Anglican Church Grammar School, also known as Churchie.
Former students of the Gold Coast’s Southport School, where Mr Less taught before transferring to Churchie, said he was a well-liked and respected teacher whose death came as a shock.
“He just seemed like such a positive guy. We all loved him,” said former Southport School student Mitch Lambert, quoted in the Courier Mail.
Mr Lees’ funeral service will be held at Churchie.
Flowers have been left in the park beneath the Story Bridge where Mr Lees and his son died.
