Storms leave nine dead in eastern US

Storms killed six people, including an old woman, in Virginia and two young cousins were killed when a tree fell on their tent while camping in New Jersey, Associated Press reported on Saturday.

A man was also killed in Maryland when a tree fell onto his car, the police said.

More than two million power outages were reported from Indiana to New Jersey, with the bulk of the service interruptions concentrated in the Mid-Atlantic region.

In Washington and other areas, temperature was expected to reach above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) across the region.

On Friday, the US capital reached 104 degrees Fahrenheit — topping a record of 101 degrees set in 1934.

Many residents were asked to conserve water because the sewage stations had been without power for a time.

Authorities cautioned people to drive carefully as tree limbs had littered roads and hundreds of traffic signals were out.
