Stolen Olympic swimming medal recovered

An Olympic bronze medal stolen from the home of South Australian Olympic swimmer Phil Rogers during a break-in last month has been recovered.

The 1996 Atlanta Olympics bronze medal was stolen from Rogers’ Adelaide home in a daylight raid in December, along with two Commonwealth Games gold medals, two world championship gold medals, two Pan Pacific gold medals and Rogers’ Order of Australia medal.

South Australian police said they found the medal, after acting on information they had received, at a location in Adelaide’s western suburbs on Friday.

A spokeswoman said the location could not be revealed as it could jeopardise the investigation.

The remaining medals have not yet been found but police believe the thieves may have thrown at least two of them in a bin in the city on the day of the break-in, on December 20.

At the time of the break-in, Rogers said the medals had no monetary value but were irreplaceable as the spoils of his international swimming career.

“They’re of no value to anyone else, but they’re of tremendous value to me because it’s 20 years of hard work,” he said.

“That’s what I’ve got to show my kids.

“I’m gutted and depressed. It’s just heart-wrenching the fact that I don’t have these things.”

Rogers and his family had only left their home for 90 minutes, enough time for thieves to prise open a bedroom window and find his medals, which were stashed in a bedroom cupboard.

They left behind several other silver and bronze swimming medals.
