Stick with Julia Gillard, Bob Brown tells ALP

GREENS leader Bob Brown has urged Labor to stick with Julia Gillard as party leader to maintain the stability of the government.

Despite stressing last week that his party’s agreement to support the government was with the Labor Party — not the Prime Minister — Senator Brown said yesterday he could see no sense in Labor dumping its leader, despite her poor showing in the opinion polls.

The most recent fortnightly Newspoll, published in The Australian a week ago, recorded Labor’s primary vote at a record low of 26 per cent.

After the poll’s publication, several Labor MPs who had been supportive of Ms Gillard told The Australian they believed she could not recover from her long run of poor polling results.

They did not foreshadow a leadership spill, but said they expected Ms Gillard would not improve Labor’s stocks before the end of the year — the point at which the party was likely to re-examine its options ahead of an election due in 2013.

The Coalition, sensing Labor’s weakness, spread rumours that former leader Kevin Rudd was soliciting support among his parliamentary colleagues — claims denied by the Foreign Minister.

Senator Brown, despite having been highly critical of Ms Gillard in recent weeks over the offshore processing of asylum-seekers, yesterday backed the Prime Minister, saying his party wanted to see the government run its full term.

“Stability is about maintaining the leader that went to the last election in her position as Prime Minister for the three-year term,” Senator Brown said.

“But what Labor does or what the Liberals do is up to them.”

Senator Brown’s comments came as senior government ministers strongly backed Ms Gillard.

In Washington, Wayne Swan dismissed claims that Mr Rudd, who was dumped as leader in June last year, could make a political comeback as prime minister, saying he expected Julia Gillard to remain in the top job.

The Treasurer said he gave no credence to reports that a band of Labor caucus members was plotting for Mr Rudd’s return.

“Julia Gillard is the Prime Minister,” Mr Swan said.

“She’s a very good leader, and she’s going to lead this party and government for a long time.”

Human Services Minister Tanya Plibersek said there was no chance Ms Gillard would be replaced by the party.

“Julia Gillard has the full support of the caucus because she is an excellent leader,” Ms Plibersek said yesterday.

“She has got complete support from me and from the caucus.”

Defence Minister Stephen Smith said it was unwise to count out a government that was only one year into its term.

“Yes, we’re going through difficult political times,” Mr Smith said.

“But we strongly support

the Prime Minister — she is showing great courage and great determination.

“I’ve seen plenty of media speculation, but we’re getting on with the very difficult task of trying to effect key economic, key social and key structural reforms — that always makes it difficult for government.”
