One minute, you’re a relatively unknown guitarist playing a car park in Barnsley… the next, you’re inundated with offers to work around the world.

For Leeds-based musician, Jon Gomm,  it was a dream come true – and it’s all thanks to a one-word message on Twitter from Stephen Fry which simply said, ‘Wow’.

The comedian, who has almost 4million people following his tweets, was so impressed by Jon’s distinctive technique that he posted a link to his latest single, Passionflower – which has now had about 2million hits.

During his performances, singer-songwriter Jon, 35, not only retunes his acoustic guitar while playing but also hits different parts of it for percussive effect.

Many of those who have viewed his YouTube clip are astonished that so many sounds – such as snare drum, bass drum and bongo – can come from just one instrument at the same time.

Among his legion of new fans is seminal 60s guitarist David Crosby from Crosby, Stills and Nash, who has since contacted him.

Over the next few months, Jon is now due to appear on national television in Holland, Turkey and Portugal and will also be touring Australia, as well as Britain, the Daily Telegraph reported.

He said: ‘My previous life – of driving from my home in Leeds to Vienna to
play a concert – has suddenly changed dramatically.

‘So far, I’ve been invited onto national TV in Turkey, Portugal and Holland and
this year, will be touring in around 15 countries on three continents, and
my CDs will be finding their way into stores from Germany to Japan.

‘It’s been crazy, but I felt lucky enough before, just being able to make my
living as a musician, so anything more is a bonus’

Jon first started strumming at the age of two, albeit on a ukelele as his parents couldn’t find a guitar small enough.

By the age of six, having progressed to  classical guitar, he wrote his first song.

And aged 12, he accompanied his father, a music critic, to blues gigs in his hometown of Blackpool.

As for teachers, he learned from the best: touring musicians would sleep over at the Gomm household on condition that young Jon had free lessons.

So it was that among his mentors were American blues greats Walter Trout, Bob Brozman and English player Norman Beaker (from the Jack Bruce band).

Jon eventually moved to Leeds to become a professional musician, and turned down a place at Oxford University.

As yet, he has not signed up to a
major label, and he happily gives away his music from his website (where
he has a ‘pay what you want’ policy).

Jon has so far averaged around 200 gigs a year – including playing in a car park in Barnsley, south Yorkshire – often sleeping on friends’ sofas.

But clearly, all that is about to change.

If you think Jon is good you should see and hear Mike Dawes!

This is rubbish.
Go to you tube and search – John Martyn “rather be the devil”.
There you will see real talent and genius.

Tommy Emmanuel has been doing this sort of stuff for ages. Antonio Forcione gets amazing sounds out of his accoustic too.

Well done. Good luck and you should make it – all the way to the top. Beautiful music, lovely vocals and a very nice guy.
Do not let “management” take over and ruin your life.
Stick with your friends.

I’ve seen Jon Gomm preform a few times, he is really amazing! 😀 x

first seen in a field in lincolnshire playing to a broken sound system and a drunken hippy crowd, then watched at gigs in the local pub when he comes over. Jon you deserve this! you have an amazing talent and i wish you all the very very best. (just as long as you keep on coming back of course :-D)

“WOW”, didn’t seem an adequate description of this young man’s talent. That was until he opened his mouth, and made that awful noise. Should have stuck to playing the guitar, “that” was exceptional!

I do like his playing but not his voice but fiarie ( ithink that is what his name is) Italian guitarist is as good if not better. has no-one heard of Tommy Emmanuel?

I already knew about this Jon Gomm. What i want to know is who the hell is Stephen Fry?

I must agree with Mr. Fry. WOW!
