Stay home warning as siege drags on

A siege at a south-west Melbourne house has ended but the man who was reportedly holed up with a gun inside is nowhere to be found.

Heavily armed police this morning sealed off the house and a number of streets in Werribee after paramedics were called to reports of an assault at 5.40am.

Police entered the house but found no one inside, said a police spokesman.

‘‘No one was inside at the time…whether someone has left the scene or otherwise, that’ll be subject to the investigation that will now take place,’’ he said.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman had earlier urged residents on Albatross Avenue who had not been evacuated from their homes already to stay inside while the siege continued.

Victoria Police deputy commissioner Kieran Walsh said this morning that the man had holed himself up with a weapon.

‘‘I understand he has discharged the firearm within the house,’’ he said.

A police spokesman said the situation was now ‘‘resolved’’ and residents are free to leave their homes, he said. Road closures were being removed gradually and local traffic would soon return to normal.

Paramedics have not treated anyone at the scene, Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said.
A police spokeswoman said the Special Operations Group had been called to the street.
