Stars out in force for 46th Super Bowl

So popular are they that there are shows on prime time television in the week
before Super Bowl Sunday featuring the greatest half time commercials of all
time.

Actors Jerry Seinfeld and Matthew Broderick are both in adverts for troubled
car manufacturer Honda this year, the latter featuring in a skit on his hit
teen 1986 teen movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – 26 years and at least that
many pounds on, as one critic put it.

Madonna will add a further sprinkle of star dust by performing the half time
show at Super Bowl XLVI.

In a press conference earlier this week, she confessed to feeling a little
nervous, and promised that there would be no repeat of the infamous 2004 “wardrobe
malfunction,” when an overenthusiastic Justin Timberlake bared Janet
Jackson’s breast during a misguided attempt to spice up their performance.

As for Gisele, she has a major role in the proceedings as an NFL WAG – she is
married to Tom Brady, the veteran quarterback for the New England Patriots,
who will win a record-equalling fourth Super Bowl ring if his team triumphs
tomorrow.

A “sappy” email she sent to friends and family begging for their
prayers for her husband was leaked to a mocking New York Post this week.

“My sweet friends and family,” it began. “This Sunday will be a
really important day in my husband’s life. He and his team worked so hard to
get to this point and now they need us more than ever to send them positive
energy so they can fulfil their dream of winning this Super Bowl.

“So I kindly ask all of you to join me on this positive chain and pray
for him, so he can feel confident, healthy and strong. Envision him happy
and fulfilled experiencing with his team a victory this Sunday.” The
email led to much mirth among New Yorkers, who pointed out that God had
already proved a little too busy to answer the prayers of Tim Tebow, the
ultrareligious quarterback for the Denver Broncos which failed to progress
in the Playoffs despite his on-field exhortations to Jesus.

But ordinary fans in New York, Boston (where the Patriots are based)

and New Jersey (confusingly the home of Giant Stadium) have hardly more
perspective about the game.

Homes, shops and business across the North East are emblazoned in the colours
of the Big Blue, as the Giants are known, and the Pats, the slight
favourites for the game having had a far superior season.

There are Super Bowl cupcakes, Super Bowl condoms, and Super Bowl pizzas. A
group of residents in an old folks home in New Jersey have even recorded a
Super Bowl rap song.

Thousands of fans have raided their savings to pay up to $17,000 (£11,000) for
tickets to the game, while their millionaire neighbours are paying ten times
that for private jets to the game.

As befits the sporting – and culinary – rivalry between the two states, the
governors of New York and Massachusetts have had a side bet on the game.

If the Patriots win, New York’s Gov Andrew Cuomo will send his counterpart Gov
Deval Patrick 46 dozen bagels and 46 cheesecakes. If the Giants triumph, Gov
Patrick will dispatch 46 pies and 46 cases of clam chowder.

And the players themselves are not going to miss out on all the eating. The
Giants have arranged for pizzas from their favourite restaurant to be flown
out to them in Indianapolis.

The pies in their special hot cases are getting a VIP escort through LaGuardia
airport to ensure there are no delays.
