Police spokesman Tony Vella said: “They were setting up when the top portion collapsed on top of them. Unfortunately, four people were hurt. The remainder of the people, when they heard the stage coming down, ran from the area.”
Police said about 20 people were in the direct vicinity of the stage, conducting rehearsals and sound checks, when it gave way. There were no strong gusts of wind at the time.
Witness Dusty Lalas, who was working for a local radio station, said: “There was a loud crash and it sounded like sheet metal and lightning and we just saw the stage collapse.”
Jaime Rivest, 33, said: “It was like a tornado hit the stage and in just moments the stage came down with metal everywhere.”
She said there were about 1,000 people at the venue when the stage fell at 4pm. Doors for the show were due to open at 5pm, and Radiohead were due to perform at 9.30pm.
