St George holding as river nears peak

The Balonne River is expected to peak sometime on Tuesday morning with the levees protecting the town of St George likely to hold back the water.

Thousands of people were evacuated from the cotton-growing centre of St George and taken to the safe havens of Dalby and Brisbane, with grave concerns the Balonne River would rise above the town’s levee bank.

But those worries eased on Monday afternoon, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting the river to peak at 14.5 metres on Tuesday – short of the 15-metre mark previously feared.

Balonne Shire Mayor Donna Stewart, who has had little sleep in the past 24 hours, said work to shore up the levee banks has been completed, and backed the earthen defences to protect St George.

“I’ve got every confidence it will hold the water out of the town,” said Ms Stewart, who opted to stay in the town.

“But there are about 30 homes outside the levee which have floodwater in them or soon will have.

“I don’t know what sort of damage has been caused, you would have to get in a boat to look at them.”

About 2500 of St George’s 3000 residents had evacuated although several hundred ignored the mandatory evacuation order issued on Sunday night.

However, Ms Stewart said those who stayed knew what they were doing.

“They were monitoring the situation and they said they would have evacuated this morning if the river continued to rise … they weren’t going to be taking any risks,” she said.

“Those places up there are above 16 metres so they were never going to be flooded.”

Floodwaters had damaged 280 homes in the town of Mitchell, where evacuations also occurred at the weekend.

Residents slowly re-entered the town on foot as damage to the Maranoa River Bridge – the main access point to the town – was assessed for its safety.

Residents were also able to return to nearby Roma, where about 380 homes had some form of damage.

Further west at Charleville, and residents were yet to receive the all-clear to re-enter the town, despite floodwaters slowly subsiding.
