Police arrested three miners for setting up roadblocks across the northern coal mining region of Asturias and for reportedly throwing ‘home-made rockets’ at riot police, AFP reported on Monday
Police also detained two men who were part of a group of about 50 people throwing objects from a highway overpass onto another highway near the town of Vega del Rey.
Spanish coal miners started strikes in the last week of May. Negotiations between labor unions and the government to reach an agreement have been futile.
Coal miners say the reduction in subsidies would lead to the collapse of the country’s coal mining industry because, without government aid, Spanish coal would be more expensive than imported coal.
Some 8,000 people are employed in the 40 remaining mines across Spain.
The government subsidy cuts are part of austerity measures by the conservative government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to slash Spain’s public deficit to 5.3 percent of gross domestic product this year from 8.9 percent last year.
Battered by the global financial downturn, the Spanish economy collapsed into recession in the second half of 2008, taking down with it thousands of jobs.
