Thousands of people have taken to the streets in the Spanish capital Madrid, protesting against the conservative government’s austerity policies and planned social spending cuts.

Firemen, nurses, and other public sector workers took part in the protest rally on Tuesday, chanting “Public services are not for sale!”

The demonstrators voiced opposition to the government’s decision to extend the public sector employees’ working hours and cut the workers’ sickness benefits.

The country has announced spending cuts equal to above USD 11 billion and tax increases to reduce the country’s deficit and avoid seeking a financial bailout like the ones used by Greece, Ireland, and Portugal.

The protesters warned that the cuts devised by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s administration would jeopardize social care and emergency services.

“The hospitals are running at half capacity because there are not enough staff,” said one protester, referring to social austerity measures.

According to one of the unions, which had organized the protests, the planned cuts are threatening thousands of jobs in Madrid’s public sector.

Hit by the global financial downturn, the Spanish economy collapsed into recession in the second half of 2008. So far, Spain’s economic doldrums have forced the elimination of millions of jobs in the country.

Spain’s unemployment rate has soared to 22.85 percent, which is the highest in 17 years, meaning that there are more than five million jobless people in the country.
