Spain wildfire leaves three dead

A man and his teenage daughter drowned on Sunday after they threw themselves into the sea in order to evade the flames near the border town of Portbou, the Catalan regional government said.

The officials also said that a 70-year-old man died from a heart attack while battling the flames near his home in the town of Llers.

Seven of injured were in serious condition, the officials said, adding that a French man suffered burns on 80 percent of his body after his car was caught by flames.

Around 100 people were slightly injured due to the wildfire, a spokesman for Catalan firefighters said.

According to the Catalan government, the blaze broke out on Sunday afternoon near the border town of Jonquera and has destroyed 12,000 hectares of land.

“The fire advanced really quickly, in a way that makes it difficult to bring under control,” said Catalan interior minister Felip Puig, adding “We are working intensively.”

Some 80 firefighting brigades from Spain and France were trying to control the blaze that was fanned by strong winds of up to 90km an hour.

Authorities of nine towns have ordered residents to remain indoors with their windows and doors closed.
