Spain to fight against UK at UN

Spanish ambassador to the UN is expected to present a report at the session on Friday to assert Madrid’s claim to the Rock and urge the British government to enter into a process of negotiations over the future of the small peninsula located at Spain’s southwestern corner.

“Spain will reiterate its position and talk about the how the situation has been developing in recent months,” Daily Telegraph quoted a spokesman at Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs as saying.

“We will ask the UK to engage in conversation over sovereignty,” he added.

The move comes amid mounting diplomatic tensions between the two countries over the disputed territory, and only days after a visit by the members of the British royal family to the Rock that has raised hackles among the Spanish nationals.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo considered the royal visit as an “inopportune” plan that came amid rising dispute over fishing rights in the waters surrounding Gibraltar.

Earlier this week, Garcia Margallo criticized the British government’s stance over the disputed waters, saying “The British maintain that the waters are theirs, we maintain that they are our waters, and this discussion is going nowhere.”

“Whoever waters they are and I say they are Spanish, it is evident that vessels from both flags must use them,” he added.

Gibraltar was ceded to Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. However, Spain has sought the return of the 5.5 square-kilometer Rock.
