Spain king son-in-law in court for graft

Inaki Urdangarin, the Duke of Palma, is accused of misusing part of some 6-million-euro (USD 8 million) public funds given to his not-for-profit Noos Institute to organize sporting events.

“I appear today to demonstrate my innocence and my honor,” he said upon his arrival at the court on Saturday.

“I have carried out my responsibilities and taken decisions correctly and with total transparency,” said the former Olympic handball player.

The Duke was greeted by outraged demonstrators as he walked into the courthouse in Palma, Majorca.

The King’s son-in-law was further questioned whether the king had asked him to resign as the chairman of the Noos institute.

Urdangarin was given the title of Duke of Palma after marrying Juan Carlos’s daughter Princess Cristina. The king sidelined him from official events shortly before he was named as a formal suspect at the end of 2011.

Urdangarin moved with his wife and four children in 2009 to Washington, DC, where he serves on the board of a subsidiary of the Spanish telecoms group Telefonica. The company refused to comment on rumors that it hired him as a favor to king.
