Spain faces dramatic pollution increase

The pro-environmental activists and groups have warned that the Capital city of Madrid and its surrounding regions are exposed to unacceptable levels of air pollution.

Marked increase of air pollution levels in recent months has caused public concerns about its possible effects on the health of citizens.

Despite the growing public concerns over the matter, the local authorities have issued a statement saying that the air quality is better than what it was a decade ago.

Although the authorities have acknowledged increase in the air pollution in recent weeks, their linking of it to the weather conditions, has not convinced the citizens.

“Air quality in Madrid is not good. It is not good in the city and it is not good in the region. And this has been the case for the last decade. So, we will say the Madrid government is lying to the citizens pretending that the air quality is good and pretending that we are inside the legality regarding EU objectives and deadlines.” Said a Madrid citizen.

The environmental green groups have criticized the government and the local authorities for the way they are handling the issue and have rejected government’s mentioning of the low levels of rainfall as the real cause of the pollution, saying that the recent low levels of rainfall play a very small role in the issue.

The groups have also mentioned that the country’s public transport fare increases, more roads and urban sprawl all have created and contributed to the increase of the traffic which leads to the generation of harmful nitrogen dioxide and particle matters.

The Spanish government which is a member of the eurozone has asked the European commission to give it more time to comply with its clean air guidelines.
