South Sudan faces ‘horrifying’ disaster

The UN assistant secretary-general for human rights has said that the conflict in South Sudan has turned into a horrifying human rights disaster.

Ivan Simonovic made the remarks on Friday as he wrapped up a four-day visit to world’s youngest nation.

“What I saw was a horror,” said Simonovic, adding, “The extent of the looting, burning and destruction is hard to grasp for anybody who hasn’t been there.”

In addition, Simonovic said, “The reports that we have come across involve mass killings, extrajudicial killings, widespread destruction and looting, and child soldier recruitment.”

Up to 10,000 people are believed to have been killed so far in the violent clashes between the Sudanese government and rebel forces loyal to former Vice President Riek Machar, who was dismissed from office last July.

Simonovic accused both sides of having committed “mass atrocities” during more than one month of conflict. He described seeing bodies that had been bound before being shot on the streets of the embattled northern town of Bentiu.

“The conflict has now reached the threshold of an internal armed conflict, causing untold suffering for thousands of civilians,” said the UN official.

“In the legal sense it means that besides violations of human rights and potential crimes against humanity, we can also speak about war crimes,” Simonovic added.

Violence erupted in South Sudan on December 15, 2013, after President Salva Kiir accused militia forces headed by Machar of attempting to stage a coup. Machar denied the accusations.

According to the United Nations, about 400,000 civilians have fled their homes in the wake of violence in the country over the past weeks.
