Both conservative and liberal political blocks have made significant changes in the run-up to the vote.
The ruling party changed its name from the Grand National Party to New World Party and altered its platform, promising more welfare spending.
Meanwhile, several liberal opposition groups recently came together to form the Democratic Unity Party.
Twenty parties are fielding candidates including a student oriented Youth Party and South Korea’s Green Party.
In its first election, the Green Party is scheduled to highlight the country’s dilemma with a government promotion of economic green growth linked to atomic energy.
“After the Fukushima accident last year, nuclear reactors in South Korea became a problem, threatening future generations, so in this election we will communicate the danger of nuclear power and we seek to close our nuclear power plants step by step by 2030,” Jang Jeong-hwa from the Green Party said.
