South Africa’s Omicron Outbreak Already “Running Out of Steam”

The South African doctor who first discovered Omicron says “Britain is overreacting” by imposing more draconian restrictions and that the panic “is out of all proportion to the risks posed by this variant.”

Maybe someone should tell Boris Johnson.

Doctor Angelique Coetzee wrote a lengthy article for the Daily Mail in which she decried potential plans for canceling Christmas and placing the population under yet another onerous lockdown.

“Yet you only have to look at the picture in South Africa, where the world’s first known cases of Omicron were spotted, to realise this reaction is out of all proportion to the risks posed by this variant,” writes Coetzee.

“And I should know — because I am the doctor who first raised the alarm about Omicron back in November.”

Coetzee says she was “astonished” by the global reaction to the discovery of the variant, which in the UK included the return of mask mandates, the introduction of vaccine passports and other authoritarian measures.

The doctor emphasizes the point she has been trying to make for the past two weeks, which is that Omicron causes symptoms that are “very very mild” in comparison to other strains of the virus.

“Don’t just take my word for it. I have seen quite a few Omicron patients who have previously had the Delta variant and they will tell you that, while no one ever wants to get Covid, they feel almost lucky that it was only Omicron they had the second time around.”

Despite fearmongering over Omicron overwhelming NHS hospitals in the UK, Coetzee explains how there “haven’t been many patients admitted to hospital with Omicron” and “deaths are not rising as dramatically and neither is the average length of time people stay in hospital.”

“I am disappointed by such knee-jerk reactions,” writes the doctor. “They bear no relation to what we’re seeing in surgeries in South Africa, where people rarely even discuss Omicron.”

She concludes that the “huge overreaction” to Omicron in the UK “is scaring people unnecessarily” and that the government should actually allow the less deadly variant to spread.

“A hard lockdown would slow the process of Omicron making its way through the population and allowing people to develop the vital antibodies which will move your population towards herd immunity,” writes Coetzee.

Meanwhile, another major study finds that the “severity of Omicron is 29% lower” compared to previous COVID waves, meaning scientists who predicted the variant could actually be good news are closer to being proven correct.
