Miss Essa’s tweets were spotted by Howard Dembovsky, the CEO of Justice
Project SA, an anti-corruption body, who contacted her to ask for details.
“My first response was one of disbelief and horror that anybody could
boast about paying a bribe to someone because there’s nothing funny about it,”
he said.
“As long as you have a supply, you have a demand and the harder it is for
organisations like ours to make headway in bringing this kind of crime to an
end.”
He said Miss Essa, who is studying law at Wits University in Johannesburg, was
concerned about the consequences her tweet would have for her planned career
as a lawyer. She denied that the incident took place, saying she had made it
up “for attention”, he said.
She later tweeted: “So sorry for my tweet. I fabricated the story to
attract attention, we sometimes all do it and [I am] superembarassed”.
