Peter Nolan Sony has long been looking for a way to make the PS Vita into a gaming device that could set itself apart. This morning, the company might have found the silver bullet. The company announced a new lighter PS Vita as well as the Vita TV. The latter device will work somewhat like the Apple TV, except that instead of just watching movies you will now be able to play video games quicker and easier.
The both devices are going to be hitting Japan first, on November 14. They are both slated for eventual US releases, but dates for when the might cross the pond are still unknown. The Vita TV measures 6.5cm by 10.5cm and the system adopts the Vita chip sets so that users can play more than 1,300 different games from the newest Sony handheld, all the way back to the PSP and older Playstation games. Movies and eBooks will also be viewable on your TV using this device. When it does hit shelves in Japan, it is expected to retail for around $100. This is also in line with what an Apple TV currently costs and that might have come into the company’s consideration. You will also need to buy a dual shock controller, which will mean that the final price of the system, should you want to play games will cost around $130. Unless you already have a PS3 or PS4 (which will be out by the time this device hits the US) then you can use those controllers.
The lighter Vita that was debuted today as well is said to be 20 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter. The device is supposed to have an extra hour of battery life and will retail for around $190. This will hit Japan on October 10 and like its’ counterpart there is no release date yet for the United States. Expect both the Vita TV and the new PS Vita to hit North America by the end of this year or the early part of 2014.
