Somalia al-Shabab strongholds captured

Residents reported the presence of heavily armed Ethiopian troops with several battle wagons in the towns of Yurkud and Bardale late on Tuesday.

“Ethiopian troops and Somali soldiers captured entire rebel-held town of Yurkud, al-Shabab fighters fled the town so far, but heavy clashes are still going on in Bardale town,” Abdihakim Roble, a resident in Bardale told Press TV.

“Residents are fleeing from their homes while al-Shabab is forcing civilians to join the war,” he added.

Another report said a landmine explosion targeted Ethiopian convoy in the area, killing five civilians on the spot and seriously injuring eight others.

According to Somali government officials, the troops were headed towards Baidoa, a second lucrative city that is held by the fighters.

Meanwhile, hundreds of newly trained al-Shabab fighters armed with different kinds of machine guns, mortars and small arms were paraded in Baidoa.

Al-Shabab said they had completed military training for hundreds of fighters in Bay and Bakool region to fight against the transitional government troops and Ethiopians, who are approaching towards the town.

Al-Shabab spokesman Sheikh Abdi Aziz Abu Mus’ab said the group had received substantial information on the planned offensives.

Reports from Baidoa accused al-shabab of forcing students to join the war.
Somalia has been without an effective central government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

The weak Western-backed transitional government in Mogadishu has been battling al-Shabab fighters for the past five years and is propped up by a 12,000-strong African Union force consisting of troops from Uganda, Burundi, and Djibouti.
