Soldiers mark Anzac Day in Timor

In the glow of 500 candles, serving Australian and New Zealand soldiers marked Anzac Day in East Timor.

In the pre-dawn darkness candles cast a soft light as the members of the International Stabilisation Force (ISF), together with international guests and expatriates, commemorated Anzac Day in Dili.

A simple wooden Cenotaph, in front of four flagpoles flying the Turkish, New Zealand, Australian and East Timorese flags, was guarded by an Anzac Catafalque party made up of Australian and New Zealand soldiers.

The Ode was read in English and Maori.

Australian Ambassador to Timor Leste Miles Armitage delivered the address, reflecting on the sacrifices of the Timorese, who helped Australia and its allies 70 years ago in World War II.

This year is likely to be the last commemorated by an Anzac deployment in East Timor.

New Zealand’s Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Tony Fautua, led the assembly in the Reading.

The Turkish police commander in East Timor, Superintendent Akif Mudur, read Kemal Ataturk’s immortal poem written to comfort the mothers whose sons died at Gallipoli.
