Huffing and puffing, his nostrils flaring in rage, this is the moment a lion viciously lashes out at a three-year-old girl.
But brave Sofia Walker refuses to back down and instead stares intently at the furious big cat just inches away.
The unlikely showdown took place at Wellington Zoo in New Zealand last week.
Fortunately for Sofia, a thick pane of safety glass stood between her and Malik, the seven-year-old lion so incensed by her gall.

Friendly: Brave Sofia Walker eyeballs a furious lion at Wellington Zoo in New Zealand last week
Surprised: The three-year-old girl briefly recoils as the lion, Malik, lashes out in anger
The incredible moment was captured on camera by Sofia’s father Julian Walker.
At one point, the fascinated little girl turns to her parents and asks, ‘What’s he telling me?’
‘I think he’s telling you to move away, Sofia,’ a woman responds off camera. ‘He wants to eat his food.’
But Sofia remained as transfixed with the animal as he was with her and the battle of wills continued.
Then, once more unable to hold in his
frustration, Malik pounced for a second time, wildly swiping his front
paws against the glass as he stood on his hind legs.
Paul Hatton, the zoo’s team leader of
carnivores and primates, told the New Zealand Herald: ‘There were a
couple of moments where she was a little bit surprised, which is fair
enough completely, but she didn’t seem too bothered.
‘He’s massive and you sometimes
forget how big he is until you see a picture of him right up next to a
small child. He’s a big character.’
Curious: Following the lion’s first assault, the small girl turned to ask her mother what he was trying to tell her
Protected: The glass separating girl from beast is 33mm thick – not even a sledgehammer could break it
Malik, who had been just given his breakfast, is an easily grumpy and defensive lion, Mr Hatton said.
He explained: ‘They don’t like to share, lions.’
Malik has plenty of room in his enclosure, but on this occasion refused to move out of sight from visitors.
The glass separating man from beast is 33mm thick and is constructed of three separate layers that are bonded together. Not even a sledgehammer could break it, Mr Hatton said.
Sofia’s father said: ‘She’s always
had this quiet confidence with animals, but she’s certainly more
confident with a lion than I would be, that’s for sure.’

I have seen something similar at London Zoo with a couple of Otters who started screeching whenever someone approached their area. At the top of their voices, running away and then facing up and screeching desperately. It’s the same when Llamas spit. What a miserable life they must lead. We are always told to use infrared (invisible to animals) lights if looking for wildlife at night, and to keep noise down when out looking for them in nature etc, yet at zoos it is perfectly acceptable for a bunch of spoiled kids to kick and scream and taunt around these animals who are just trying to cope. That was a very human reaction from the lion, and I can’t help but feel sorry for it. Freak show mentality.

If only we could lock up certain humans and have them tormented all day. I can think of a good few it’d be perfect for 😉

I hate animal prisons,

They need to remove the lion’s claws, he seems to be scratching the glass somewhat.

You know what, if I was a Lion imprisoned in a zoo, I’d be lashing out too at people who find enjoyment in razzing me up, child or no child.

This child should have been made to get away from the window and prevented from annoying and taunting a captive animal that just wants to be left alone… More reasons to hate zoos in my opinion, they deprive the animals of even the most basic dignity.
