Social Gaming Apps for Android — Steam, Xbox Live and More

For many people, gaming is no longer a solitary experience where you buy a game and bring it back home and play it — not even on Android-powered smartphones and tablets. Because it’s not just that people are buying games from the Android Market, or Gameloft‘s store, or other online marketplaces. They’re making friends, playing online, and earning trophies and achievements through gameplay that their friends can then see on their profiles.

These social networks are like Facebook for gaming. And there are a ton of them, many of which are tied to a specific console or platform, like the PlayStation Network or Xbox Live. But even those are starting to get smartphone and tablet apps for them, which work on your Android device.

Steam

The popular game store for Windows PCs and Macs now has its own app on the Android Market. The app is still in the beta testing stage, but any Steam member who wants to can use it now. With it, you can buy games from the Steam store (and keep tabs on the latest sales), as well as check out your friends’ profiles and achievements and use the Steam chat to stay in touch with them.

On the downside, once the official Steam app was unveiled the unofficial third-party apps started being pulled from the Market, according to Droid Gamers. There’s no official word yet on what caused this, or whether or not it was at the request of Valve (the company behind Steam). Valve officially makes available a Steam API so that third-party apps can integrate with the network, and this is what these apps used.

Xbox Live

An official Xbox Live app for Android isn’t available yet. But a Microsoft spokesperson who talked to a Forbes magazine contributor confirmed that Microsoft is bringing “a few of our Xbox experiences and titles to other platforms,” without mentioning Android by name. Meanwhile, Kip Kniskern of Liveside has noticed a Microsoft job posting for bringing Xbox Live to “Windows Phone, iOS and other mobile platforms”.

There are currently a handful of unofficial Xbox Live apps on the Android Market. These don’t allow you to buy or play games, however.

PlayStation Network

The official PlayStation Network app on the Android Market has severely limited features, and does not let you buy games or even chat with PSN friends. It also only works on PlayStation-certified Android devices, such as the Xperia Play.

Gameloft Live

The just-launched social gaming network by Android publisher Gameloft bears an uncanny resemblance to Xbox Live, right down to the 3d avatars and unlockable achievements. It only works with Gameloft’s games, however.
