SNP: Scot. Independence, beacon of hope

“Home rule with independence beats Tory rule from Westminster,” Salmond will tell his party’s conference on Saturday.

“With the people of Scotland in charge, speaking with our own voice, reflecting our own values and priorities – we will make our country better. This is our message of hope,” he will say.

Salmond will use the occasion to launch SNP’s campaign for the local councils’ elections due on May 3, which is believed to be a key step for the party in its push for a yes vote in the Scottish independence referendum, it wants to hold in autumn 2014.

The SNP seeks to make the upcoming conference its biggest spring event ever with an estimated more than 2,000 participants.

The grand gathering is believed to provide a ripe opportunity for Salmond to rally support for both the coming elections and the referendum after the nationalists secured an overall majority in the Scottish parliament’s vote in May 2011.
