The Sydney Morning Herald’s website has moved into the top spot as Australia’s number one news and current affairs website.
Almost three million individuals went to the smh.com.au in April, according to the latest figures from the audience measurement company Nielsen.
The smh.com.au registered 2,937,000 visitors, knocking Nine News’ website off the top spot by a slim margin of 56,000, which might be overturned by May’s figures which are out next week.
Darren Burden, general manager, news for Fairfax’s metropolitan media division, welcomed the figures but added a note of caution. ‘‘One month isn’t sustained news leadership, but you need to win the first one to start a trend –we should thank our readers who have helped get us there,’’ he said.
Ninemsn is expecting to be back on top for May. Its editor in chief Hal Crawford said: ‘‘After years of total domination the SMH has now won one month. Congratulations. We look forward to May’s results.’’ Year on year figures are unavailable because Nielsen began a new way of measuring web users in September combing interviews of web users with cookie data.
People visiting The Age, which got 1,676,000 visitors in April, stayed there longer than any other news website, spending on average over 57 minutes a month on the site. Visitors to the smh.com.au spent on average 45 minutes per person a month.
SMH has also maintained the number one news mobile site in Australia, and continues to grow strongly, according to another set of Nielsen figures. The SMH mobile site reaches 182,707 daily unique browsers, an audience that has grown 77 per cent over the last year. The Age mobile site reaches 100,625 average daily unique browsers, an audience that has grown 79 per cent over the last year.
