SME revenue, confidence still lacklustre

Only one in five small to medium enterprises (SME) surveyed in a recent study expect economic conditions to improve within the next year.

A survey of 1004 business owners and managers by business software provider MYOB showed confidence and revenue growth among SMEs was still lacklustre.

Fewer than one-fifth (19 per cent) of the businesses expected the local economy to improve within the next 12 months.

This was largely unchanged from MYOB’s March survey, which was the lowest percentage recorded since March 2009, amid the global financial crisis.

Only 18 per cent of businesses reported an increase in revenue over the past 12 months, compared with 20 per cent in the prior report.

Construction and trade businesses fared the worst, with 52 per cent experiencing a revenue loss in the past year.

However, 55 per cent of businesses said they would keep their prices and margins the same this year, despite the onset of the carbon tax.

“This indicates that many will simply cop the carbon tax related cost increases on the chin,” MYOB chief executive Tim Reed said in a statement.

He recommended business owners to consider whether this was the best course of action in attracting and keeping customers.

“Frequently, good service rates above price in a customer’s mind,” he said.
