Lists of condo amenities usually include things like state of the art appliances and a swimming pool, yet one future development in Kazakhstan is raising the bar.
Designed for Astana, the cold capital city of Kazakhstan, this ‘white roof’ 1,000-foot ski run wraps around an apartment tower, bringing winter sports right to residents’ doorsteps.
Winter is often a tough time for people living in the city with temperatures averaging around minus 20 degrees Celsius and cold conditions lasting from November right through to April.
One of the team that worked on the project, Vladimir Ku, said that with such a long period of winter conditions, it was a tragedy that there was not the opportunity to do winter sports with no suitable slopes in the area, which was the motivation behind the new project by architect Shohan Mataybekov.
The roughly $70 million project would be the world’s first residential building that doubles as an outdoor ski slope, if the City Council officials will approve it.
This will be a 21-story apartment building mounted with an artificial ski slope that wraps around the rooftop in a U-shaped formation.
The ski slope would be built from artificial snow called Snowflex to allow for year-round skiing for four to six months of the city’s winter, natural snow would be used.
It has been reported that the Slalom House will house 421 two-bedroom apartments, as well as shops and restaurants on the lower levels.
