The Dark MOFO’s Skywhale has offended a Tasmanian alderman.

The controversial artwork, created for Canberra’s centenary, was brought to Tasmania as part of Hobart’s Dark MOFO winter festival.

The whale-like balloon, which features numerous breasts, flew over Royal Park in Launceston on Sunday.

City alderman Annette Waddle says it is suggestive and offensive to women.

Alderman Waddle told a council meeting on Monday she was not amused by the display.

“There were 16 great breasts hanging down from this whale, which didn’t even look like a whale, and it was on display for anybody to see,” she said.

“I don’t think it was funny.”

Mayor Albert van Zetten disagreed, saying it was designed for shock value.

“It’s something that was obviously used to gain attention,” he said.

“That’s what it is and that’s what it should be seen for as a bit of fun and something that people can go and have a look at.

“The great part about it was Dark MOFO and all the promotions that’s going on with that is starting to come into Launceston as well, so we’re very pleased with that.”
