A man has been jailed for six years for the long-running sexual abuse of his teenage daughter, a crime the judge said breached a fundamental societal norm and must be condemned.
The 66-year-old man, who cannot be identified, was sentenced to a minimum three years and eight months in jail after being found guilty of two counts of incest by a Victorian County Court jury.
The abuse began in 1984 when the man began climbing into his daughter’s bed and asking her to perform sex acts on him, and continued while she was a teenager.
Sentencing the man on Monday, Judge Michael Murphy said the victim had suffered significantly as a result of the abuse and the subsequent court proceedings.
While her father had caused her further pain by showing a lack of remorse and failing to apologise, she still loved him, the judge said.
Judge Murphy said the crimes were in the mid-range of seriousness.
“The victim and her sister were relying fully on you as a parental authority figure,” he said.
“The breach of trust here is very significant.
“You have breached the fundamental societal norm.
“Your conduct must be utterly condemned.”
The court heard that the man, who was convicted in 2007 of possessing child pornography, had himself been sexually abused as a child.
