TCP : President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi invited the U.S. House of Representatives to participate in observing the parliamentary elections, which will be held in October, in order to “witness [the elections’] integrity and transparency,” the presidency stated Saturday evening.
Sisi’s invitation came during a meeting with a congressional delegation, during which both sides discussed mutual cooperation.
During the meeting, President Sisi welcomed the outcome of the U.S.-Egypt Strategic Dialogue held in August, during which he urged for enhancing cooperation on shared challenges, most importantly terrorism, “whose repercussions stretch across the Middle East and the world.”
The meeting also tackled current crises and deteriorating humanitarian conditions that affect both region and European countries, as demonstrated in the refugee crisis.
The delegation, led by Republican Congressman Steve Scalise, said they “will convey a positive message to the Congress upon returning to the U.S. to stress Egypt’s pivotal role as a cornerstone for peace and security in the Middle East,” according to the statement.
On Sept. 3, a U.S. Congressional delegation met with Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria and Patriarch of Saint Mark Diocese at Saint Mark’s Cathedral in Cairo, to review the situation of the Copts in Egypt.
In May, Egypt hosted a visit by a congressional delegation who discussed with Egyptian officials security cooperation as well as recent Middle East developments especially the crises in Yemen and Libya.
