The conversations, secretly taped by investigators in January 2011, were the latest batch of wiretapped calls to be posted online by La Repubblica, a centre-Left daily and long-time critic of the politician.

In another call he apparently told Ms Polanco, a single mother of one whom he allegedly installed in a rent-free apartment in Milan: “I’m in a very difficult moment in my political life, I’ve just delivered four speeches to parliament, it was really hard. I’m in a very tough fight but when I win the war, then I will see you and I will make the most of your lips.”

Mr Berlusconi was plunged into the biggest scandal of his career when it emerged in October 2010 that one of the female guests at his parties was Karima El Mahroug, a Moroccan-born dancer known as Ruby the Heart Stealer who had run away from home.

Prosecutors subsequently alleged that he had paid her for sex when she was 17 – a criminal offence, because only women above the age of 18 are allowed to sell themselves.

Despite the scandal, the bunga bunga parties apparently continued, prompting Nicole Minetti, a half-British former showgirl at the heart of the affair, to joke that the prime minister had “taken up his gymnastic activities again”.

Miss Minetti, who is now a regional politician in Mr Berlusconi’s PDL party, is accused in a separate trial of recruiting prostitutes for Mr Berlusconi.

She denies the allegations.

Other telephone conversations appear to reveal extreme jealousy between the showgirls, who competed for Mr Berlusconi’s attention and generosity, constantly comparing the cash and gifts of jewellery that he gave them.

Many of them feared that if he was toppled from power, the rivers of cash would immediately dry up.

“If he falls, I won’t eat,” Miss El Mahroug said in another taped conversation.
