A gunman fired a shot at a group of men in a car before chasing them at up to 170km/h along a busy Melbourne freeway, police say.
Two groups of men had been chatting in two parked cars in a car park at the corner of York and Ferrars streets in South Melbourne when an argument took place at about 4.30am (AEST) on Sunday.
A short time later, a man in a third car allegedly produced a handgun and shot at one of the cars, a Holden Astra, police said.
The Astra driver fled the carpark, driving east on York Street, but the gunman gave chase, with the pursuit leading onto the Monash Freeway and reaching at speeds up to 170km/h before the chasing car eventually turned around.
The Astra driver, a 22-year-old man, drove to Narre Warren Police Station – some 40km from where the shooting took place – and reported the incident.
Detective Senior Constable Chris Sheen said ballistics experts were combing the scene of the shooting and the Astra for evidence on Sunday.
Police believe some members of the groups knew each other, but it’s unclear if the gunman knew the Astra’s occupants.
“It’s an extremely dangerous incident that’s occurred, firstly with a firearm being discharged, and then with those sort of speeds in a public place” Det Sen Const Sheen told reporters.
No one was injured.
