A shark has been spotted 50km from where a 21-year-old man was killed in a shark attack off the West Australian coast.
Kyle James Burden, 21, was fatally injured off Bunker Bay, about 300km south of Perth, at 1pm (WST) on Sunday.
Police said Mr Burden, who was bodyboarding, died in the water after the shark bit a large part of his lower body.
Since Mr Burden’s death, authorities have been searching the area to locate the shark, but say there is no intention to kill the animal.
WA’s Department of Fisheries acting regional manager Mike Burgess told AAP there had been a shark sighting on Monday about 1.30pm (WST) at popular surfing spot Huzzas beach, in Gracetown, about 50 kms from Bunker Bay.
‘A surfer saw the shark. He was with a small group of people in the water,’ he said.
Gracetown is where 31-year-old Nicholas Edwards was killed by a shark on August 17 last year.
Mr Burgess said the beach would be closed for 24 hours so that authorities could investigate the sighting.
He said any suggestion that the animal could be the same shark that attacked Mr Burgess was merely ‘speculation’ at this stage.
