A shark has been sighted at a Sydney beach moments after federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott got out of the water.
Mr Abbott had just ended a press conference at Manly Beach on Monday when the shark alarm was sounded and swimmers were ordered out of the water.
He had spent several minutes in the surf training with a group of young surf lifesavers.
A surfer saw the shark off the beach at the end of the Corso just before 10am (AEDT).
Lifeguards sounded a warning siren and ordered everyone out of the water after confirming the sighting.
It was not clear how large or what species the shark was.
Monday’s incident follows a number of sightings of large sharks off the NSW Central Coast at Terrigal, Copacabana and Avoca last week.
A surfer suffered relatively minor injuries when he was bitten on the arm off North Avoca beach.
