APPLICANTS to the Australian Defence Force are being asked if they are gay or good at sex as part of psychological testing.

Other questions include if the candidate is cheating on their partner, if they are addicted to pornography or if they’ve ever made a sex tape.

A male candidate spoke to The Sunday Times this week after being offended by what he considered an extremely personal line of questioning.

Another employee at the ADF confirmed they were also asked sexually orientated questions during recruitment.

The potential recruit was told the questions were necessary to ensure they had no secrets that could be used if someone tried to blackmail them in future.

A spokesman for Defence Minister Stephen Smith said he had been advised that these sort of sexually explicit questions were not within the “testing parameters” and would serve “no useful purpose”.

The ADF is still trying to recover from the release of several damning reports in the wake of its academy’s “Skype sex scandal” last year, in which an 18-year-old cadet alleged a sexual encounter was broadcast on the internet without her permission.

The scandal prompted several wide-ranging reviews into the ADF, which criticised its blokey and closed culture.

The reviews uncovered 775 “plausible” sexual-abuse claims from men and women dating back 60 years that should be acted on.

An ADF spokesman said the psychological tests were outsourced to a “workforce solutions” company called the ManpowerGroup.

A request for the list of test questions was denied.

“Release of test items and interview questions asked of applicants undergoing the ADF selection process into the public domain would potentially undermine the process,” the spokesman said.

ManpowerGroup also refused to elaborate on the type of questions put to candidates.

Internet forum Whirlpool has an entire thread dedicated to the invasive sex questions asked during the ADF psych tests.

The ADF spokesman said that all ManpowerGroup psychologists and assistants used were trained specifically to manage the information arising from the psychological tests.

The Defence Department’s website says the purpose of the psychological interview is to determine the ability of a candidate to cope with a military environment.

It is also meant to determine whether their values and “life outlook” were personally compatible with the force.
