Severe storm warnings issued for NSW

Severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued for much of NSW, with people being told to brace for flash flooding and large hailstones as more thunderstorms sweep in.

Alerts are in place for the northern rivers, mid-north coast, Hunter, Illawarra, Central Tablelands and parts of the South Coast.

People in the Southern Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains, Snowy Mountains and Northern Tablelands districts are also being told to brace themselves.

Earlier the Bureau of Meteorology cancelled warnings of wild weather affecting Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong and surrounding areas.

“Very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and large hailstones are likely,” the bureau said.

The warning comes after a large hailstorm in the Blue Mountains on Monday afternoon caused the roof of a sports centre to partly collapse and damaged dozens of properties.

Emergency crews have received many calls since the downpour in Katoomba just before 2.30pm (AEDT), with most asking for help with leaking roofs and water damage, a spokesman for the State Emergency Service told AAP.

Part of the roof at Katoomba Sports and Aquatic Centre had collapsed, according to Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman Ian Krimmer.

There was also an electrical fire in an air-conditioning duct at a Coles supermarket as a result of a roof leak.
